David Almond joined the staff of First Baptist Church in 2005, having previously served in parishes in Pennsylvania, Texas, and Connecticut. He began his career as a church musician while still in high school and, in a career spanning almost 50 years, he has served many denominations: Lutheran, Unitarian-Universalist, United Methodist, and Episcopal. He has extensive experience as a teacher, lecturer, baritone soloist, accompanist, conductor, and composer.
David’s degrees include a Bachelor of Music and a Master of Music from the University of Hartford, in West Hartford, CT where he studied theory, organ, conducting, composition, and voice. He has continued his music education by participating in a number of workshops and master classes and studied conducting and choral literature with Sir David Willcocks at summer programs in Wisconsin and New Hampshire.
David feels strongly that music is a vital part of the life and worship of this community of faith. Hymns and choral, hand bell, and organ music proclaim God’s word and enable the people to unite in their offering of thankful praise. The choir’s ministry includes musical leadership at Sunday services throughout the year.
David and his wife Kathi live in New London. Kathi teaches at the Wilmot Learning Place. They are the parents of three grown children: Timothy, Heather and Rebekka.
